From the architect. The project is a small semi-detached house of land area 323 sqm and a built up area of 493 sqm. It is made up of 2 layers, an outer layer and an inner layer; a house within a house.
1. The outer layer protecting the inner layer from the sun and the rain with an intermediate airspace in between. This creates a tropical house without having to use deep roof overhangs to protect the inner habitable spaces.
2 .Enhancement of privacy between house and the neighbouring houses (as they tend to be very near in Singapore). This is done by having the elevational openings of both layers having their own individuality and character so that they do not line up so that there is never an easy direct view into the inner house from the outside.
3. A more interesting passage and movement created within and throughout the house with the winding staircase and the many narrow, sometimes wide, double and triple volume spaces.
