Since ancient times, the moat has been an important barrier and an important part of a city. Although the moat in the modern city has gradually lost its original defense function, they are still in the memories of a city. Beijing's moat not only carries the memory and development of the city, but also preserves many precious historical and cultural memories.

The old Beijing West Moat was diverted to the red line of the project in the 1970s and became an underground cover river, which still plays an active role in flood discharge and drainage. The west moat is not only a constraint condition of the project but also a cherished historical relic. The protection, utilization, and display of the western moat is one of the important topics throughout this project.
With their flexible posture, rivers and water have a great impact on every change of the city, every renovation of architecture, and even the people who live here. A major vision of this renovation is to evoke memories about the river in people's memory.

The headquarters office building of Beijing Urban Construction Design and Development Group is located at No. 5 Fuchengmen North Street, which was built in the 1970s. Since the Tangshan earthquake, it has been used for more than 40 years. The subsequent emergence of some security risks also makes this old building in urgent need of renewal. Two main buildings are facing east and west as office buildings on the site, and the south side is adjacent to the residential building, with only a small distance, which brings some conflicts with the residents' life. In addition, the two buildings also underwent a façade renovation in the 1990s, so they presented an eclectic style, which now seems to be incompatible with the company's vision and the overall appearance of the city.

After the renovation, the appearance of the building was completely new, and we replaced the original eclectic façade with a red terracotta brick façade. In this way, it pays tribute to the old building made of red bricks. In addition to strictly maintaining the original shape of the building, the facade window openings on the standard floor are restored one by one according to the size of the window openings of the old building, which also improves the self-shading effect of the building.

The terracotta red brick curtain wall is not only a tribute to the old building but also a new exploration and research of new technology. After many 1:1 template deliberation, the dry hanging terracotta brick open curtain wall system was finally decided to avoid caulking mortar returning to alkali to pollute the wall. The terracotta bricks are fired manually, and the color and texture of each brick become different as a result of artificial intervention. Five colors are hung randomly and alternately to express the truth and thickness of the erosion of the years.
65 kinds of modules, realize the construction of a variety of masonry patterns. From production, transportation, typesetting, and dry hanging, ceramic brick curtain wall has gone through dozens of manual processes, which is not only a respect for traditional skills but also a perfect interpretation of the spirit of craftsmen.

Enter the main entrance of the office building, with a stairwell that is both "open" and "closed", the transition from the exterior to the interior of the building is realized. This transparent box, created at the expense of area, is not only an innovative fire stairwell design but also a unique landscape that extends the language of the façade to the interior.

The "regeneration" of the building from the outside to the inside is the key to energizing the site. Preserving memories is not simply rebuilding old buildings. Architecture exists in a continuous flow of time, and the use of modern materials and architectural techniques can engrave the imprint of this era in architecture. In this renovation the building facade has realized the re-examination of the relationship between material, form and historical context, continuing the new inheritance of historical language, and the triple expression from form to function to technology.

The user of office space must be a large number of employees, so the renovation has also added a lot of new functions so that employees have a comfortable office environment, which is our goal of this renovation.  In the design, every space tries to leave the best sense of experience to the staff.

The original underground civil air defense of the building is retained and strengthened, the steel structure frame is built on the underground structure, the original above-ground brick-concrete structure system is removed, and the space system of the small bay is transformed into an open office system suitable for a modern office. The project renovation gives the building many new functions: gym, multi-functional hall, coffee shop, exhibition hall, library, academic lecture hall, etc., providing physical space and flexible support for employees' healthy work. In the office area, private telephone rooms, small d meeting rooms, medium-sized conference halls, leisure water bars, and island-style booths bring working experiences in different scenarios.

Courtyards have always been a major feature of traditional Chinese architecture. In modern society, people are surrounded by high-rise buildings, and courtyards have become a luxury. Therefore, in this renovation, we reintroduced the landscaped courtyard to the site. A major problem of the site before the renovation is that the distance between the office building and the adjacent residential building is narrow. Therefore, this renovation reduces the number of parking and creates landscapes in the limited space, which not only creates comfortable and pleasant outdoor communication but also blocks the opposite residential building flexibly.

Through the main foyer of the building, you can see a quiet courtyard, which is not only an extension of the view of the foyer but also borrowed the view of the library on the north side. Although the courtyard is small, it can feel the change of the four seasons, not only maintaining the connection of space but also extending the landscape to the interior through the glass curtain wall, borrowing views from each other indoors and outdoors.

In the renovation, every place that can be used as a landscape is used as much as possible. The top floor of the building partially opens the roof to form a sky courtyard. The scattered flower boxes and ornamental flowers make the roof a resting platform for employees, providing a leisure place for everyone.

5. The creation of art gallery in the city

Architectural renovation under the wave of urban renewal is not only the renovation of buildings and space functions, but also the more important point is to reflect the contemporary humanistic atmosphere. Architecture is not only a place for realizing functions, but also a carrier for displaying art. For this reason, we also set the title of this renovation as "UCD Art Museum". Many spaces inside the building were left blank during the design, and later artworks were placed according to the space requirements, so that the artworks fit the space. Walking through the interior is like being in an art gallery.

6.Continuation and coexistence of water

Water is the most spiritual element in the site. It runs through history, leaving a deep impression on memory. The underground restaurant is close to the "moat", so we forming the outer contour of the space with the shape of the river. On the west side of the moat, we set up a water feature above the underground restaurant to reintroduce the element of water to remind the existence of the underground moat.

The skylight of the restaurant is located under the water surface, the restaurant is under the sunlight, the water is sparkling, and the beauty of light and shadow is projected into the interior of the space through the skylight, making the underground dining space bright and poetic.
The main foyer spans above the "moat". The column-free foyer does not intrude on the underground moat. The underground river flows quietly and plays its original role. The ground of the main entrance hall is paved with water waves at the position of the moat, and four inscriptions on the ground describe the historical changes of the moat from the formation of the Yuan Dynasty to the present. Water is extended from concrete to abstract, from underground to ground, so that the spirituality of water can coexist with different historical periods of architecture.
