LFBR embeds sports hotel into the Sicilian coast for YAC lighthouse competition

The lighthouse sea hotel competition called for proposals to transform an abandoned structure in Sicily into a touristic complex capable of accommodating guests.This design by LFBR — titled ‘the light traces’ — was chosen as a finalist from over 900 entries.
Murro di porco’s lighthouse is a historic landmark located on a privileged site surrounded by three main elements: sky, rock, and sea.The proposed scheme seeks to pay tribute to the almost forgotten light beam that has guided hundreds of ships to the safety of the Sicilian coast. The scheme’s materiality comprises rammed earth, washed concrete, corten steel and curved glass. All of which have been designed to merge with the natural roughness of the terrain and the turbulent sea.

The tactile design invites guests into a sensory experience, where they are able to immerse themselves in the sea air, feel the rugged terrain beneath their feet, and hear the waves crashing against the rocks below.The lighthouse continues its role as a beacon, welcoming guests and creating a sense of arrival. The sport-themed development encourages visitors to embrace an active lifestyle with bike paths carved out of the landscape. The hotel encourages all guests to befriend their neighbors in order to generate a community atmosphere. Bonfire areas and juice bars have also been created with the desire to promote interaction.

The center of the hotel invites guests to participate in a collective bonfire, where an inclined slab maximizes views towards the sea.This area allows people to relax on the roof watching the clouds as they pass by. Other amenities include natural pools, controlled sea pools, two restaurants, and an artificial reef. A number of sporting activities are catered for, such as hiking, cycling, swimming, climbing, scuba diving, snorkeling, and kayaking.These recreations foster a sense of community and encourage guests to preserve resources and respect the natural environment.
